A hydraulic leak cut short Nico’s track time this afternoon. As a result he wasn’t able to complete a long run in the second practice session once the track had rubbered-in, but I hope that won’t hold him back over the remainder of the weekend.
Nico’s been driving really well all day. I expected that of him because he knows this place well: he scored his first pole position in GP2 at the track last year and the fast and flowing nature of the corners seem to suit his driving style. It’ll be interesting to see what he does over the remainder of the weekend, but I think it’ll be one of his better weekends relative to Rubens.
The new parts that we’re running this weekend stood up to the task well. The FW32 has new rear brake ducts, a new rear wing and various mechanical developments. We’re still analysing the data, but we think the gains from these parts more than makes up for the fact that we’re having to run the old front wing at this race.
Looking ahead to qualifying, I don’t want to make any predictions; the aim is simply to get the maximum from the car. I think Nico should be flat through Turn 8. He was almost flat today while carrying fuel, so he should be able to keep his right foot nailed when the car’s light. That’ll be pretty spectacular to watch.
