Seventeenth on the grid isn’t where we want to be, so it’s going to be a difficult race for Nico tomorrow. He’s used all of his new sets of tyres, but you never know what’s going to happen at Istanbul Park. There’s often a first-corner shunt and this is a track on which it’s possible to overtake.
Q1 went okay and Nico did a good lap compared to Rubens, but he made a mistake at Turn 7 in Q2 and that was it really. It didn’t help that his overlay pod wasn’t working during the session because it meant he couldn’t compare his laps to Rubens’; it was like F1 in the old days!
A lot of people have asked me whether the drivers were flat through Turn 8 in qualifying. Looking at the data, Rubens appeared to keep his foot nailed while Nico had a slight lift on his quickest lap. Nico felt he was working the tyres too hard and scrubbing off too much speed when he took the corner flat, so he had the tiniest of lifts – and for very little loss of time.
