Germany might have beaten England in the knock-out stages of the World Cup a fortnight ago, but we had the last laugh...While visiting friends in London last weekend, footie fan Nico Hulkenberg had his German-plated VW Scirocco towed by police and it cost him more than £300 to get it back. Congrats to the boys in blue!

Silvia Hoffer was finally given a leaving do by our marketing department this evening. She left AT&T Williams last winter after 11 years as our press officer and she managed to prise herself away from her new friends at McLaren to enjoy a curry in Buckingham with Liam, Claire and the gang. Er, good luck in your new job, Silvia!

Former Williams F1 star Nigel Mansell will be the FIA’s driver steward this weekend. Nigel won at Silverstone three times during his career – in 1987, ’91 and ’92 – and he’s still racing in sportscars with his sons Leo and Greg. Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher are the only drivers on the grid who raced against Nigel in F1; don’t expect any favours, guys!

The Green Man pub near Silverstone has been a regular haunt of F1 folk since the inception of the Formula One World Championship in 1950. The likes of Nelson Piquet, Keke Rosberg and Nigel Mansell used to stay at the pub for the British GP, so it was a shock to hear that a wing of the pub was destroyed by fire on Tuesday night. Luckily, no-one was hurt and we wish the pub a speedy return to ‘business as usual’.
