iWitness Magny-Cours Thursday

Belated Happy Birthday to AT&T Williams driver Nico Rosberg, the youngest F1 driver on the grid. He turned 22 on Wednesday (27 June). Do anything nice on your big day, Nico? “I spent it in the car, driving to Magny Cours, he says. What Nico didn’t tell iWitness, however, is that Miss Iceland presented him with a birthday cake on Tuesday. He was in Iceland for a sponsor day with Hamleys and after some demonstration runs in last year’s FW28B, out popped 20-year-old Johanna Vala with his cake. Don’t worry, Nico, we won’t tell Vivienne… There is no quick way of getting to Magny Cours. Nico drove from the South of France, Alex Wurz flew from England (where he was “doing some business) to Paris and then hired a car, and AT&T Williams’ director of engineering Patrick Head rode the 600-mile journey from London on a motorbike. Road hog! If there’s a shortage of JCBs to remove cars from the gravel this weekend, it’s because nine of the English-built diggers that were used at Indianapolis a fortnight ago are being sent to Iraq. They are en route to the US Army Arifjan camp in Kuwait. Let’s hope their replacements haven’t had to drive from JCB’s HQ in Derbyshire to Magny Cours…
