Growing-up in Stockton-on-Tees near Middlesbrough, Dave attended Ian Ramsey School before completing his A Levels at Stockton Sixth Form College. Whilst at school, Dave got his first taste of engineering thanks to the emphasis on the profession from his school and the support of local businesses in the North-East dedicated to motivating more students to become engineers. This ultimately led to a Year in Industry with British Steel before starting university.
He read Engineering Science at St John’s College, Oxford and graduated in 2000 with a Master’s degree. Whilst at university it was Dave’s modules in civil engineering, and a final year project sponsored by British Steel, that gave him the skills to work as a Stress Engineer at McLaren, which he began soon after leaving Oxford.
Dave had always enjoyed playing and watching a wide variety of sports, and so the opportunity to combine this passion for competition with high level engineering made Formula One extremely attractive.
After four years in the Design Office in Woking, Dave took on a position working in the Test Team at McLaren working with Pedro de La Rosa and Alex Wurz, before moving into a role on the Race Team as Heikki Kovalainen’s Performance Engineer.
Midway through the 2010 season Dave was moved into the position of Race Engineer working with reigning World Champion, Jenson Button. Dave continued this role for four years before joining Williams in 2015 to work alongside Felipe Massa.
