James graduated in 2002 with a Master’s degree in Automotive Engineering from Loughborough University. 

Soon after graduating from Loughborough, James worked as a mechanic in various championships, including the British Touring Car Championship and UK Formula Renault, where he spent a combined two years before moving on to the British GT Championship and the European Le Mans Series.

In 2005 James made the move to GP2 as a Number Two Mechanic with Super Nova Racing, before becoming a Data Engineer for Team New Zealand in A1GP and continuing in GP2 as a Data/Performance Engineer.

James’ first spell as a Race Engineer came in Auto GP in 2010 whilst combining duties as Performance Engineer in GP2, before he moved to Caterham Racing in 2011.

James was a Race Engineer in GP2 for at Caterham Racing until 2014, when he joined Williams as Race Operations Analyst. His position swiftly developed into a factory-based Performance Engineer and in the last two years has also fulfilled positions of both trackside Performance Engineer and Race Engineer for in-season testing, before becoming Lance Stroll’s Race Engineer for the 2017 season.
