The FW10 is Williams' first carbon fibre chassis and the improvedtorsional stiffness of the car has an immediate impact on performance. Keke Rosberg starts the season-opening Brazilian GP on the front row and the FW10 is the car to beat from mid-season, once reliability is established. Rosberg leaves tongues wagging at Silverstone when he sets a pole position lap of 160.938mph – the fastest lap ever recorded by an F1 car at the time. The team finds out later that he achieves this amazing feat with a slow puncture! At the Austrian Grand Prix in August, Rosberg announces that he’s to leave the team after four seasons and switch to McLaren. Nelson Piquet will partner Mansell from the start of ’86.
