With turbo engines fully entrenched in F1, Williams struggles in 1983 with its normally-aspirated Cosworth V8. The FW08C is significantly underpowered compared to the turbo cars of the manufacturer teams and Keke Rosberg does brilliantly to sneak a win at Monaco. Jacques Laffite partners the reigning champion, but there are few highlights for the Frenchman in the team’s least successful season since 1978. Much of the year is spent gearing up for the imminent arrival of Honda’s turbo power in 1984. At the last race in South Africa the Honda-powered FW09 makes its debut, with Rosberg coming home in an encouraging fifth place. Over the winter the team moves into new, bigger premises in Didcot.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT

Rosberg’s win in Monaco. Such were the vibrations through the steering during the race that Keke took off several layers of skin from both of his hands.

DID YOU KNOW?

Williams gave Ayrton Senna his first Formula One test at Donington Park in 1983. As you’d expect, the Brazilian was immediately on the pace.
