The FW14B is still regarded as one of the most advanced racing cars ever built. It features a semi-automatic gearbox, active suspension, traction control and anti-lock brakes, and its rivals struggle to live with it. Nigel Mansell wins the opening five races of the year (and finishes second to Ayrton Senna in the sixth) and wraps up the title at the Hungarian Grand Prix in August. With Riccardo Patrese’s impressive consistency in the second car, Williams are constructors’ champions for a fifth time. Nigel and Riccardo leave the team at the end of the season, Nigel to pursue a career in IndyCars and Riccardo to Benetton.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT

The emotional scenes at the British Grand Prix, when a crowd invasion follows Nigel’s victory. It’s remarkable that no-one is injured.
