2009 - Lewis Hamilton, McLaren

Hamilton ended McLaren's run of 10 races without a win in a grand prix overshadowed by Felipe Massa's accident in qualifying that left the Brazilian in a coma with serious head injuries. Sebastian Vettel collided with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, who finished second, on lap one. Spaniard Jaime Alguersuari became Formula One's youngest starter at the age of 19 and 125 days.

2008 - Heikki Kovalainen, McLaren

Kovalainen was gifted his first, and so far only, win when Massa suffered engine failure while leading with three laps remaining. Toyota's Timo Glock finished a career-best second. Hamilton suffered a puncture and was fifth.

2007 - Hamilton, McLaren

Hamilton won from pole position but the victory was overshadowed by a qualifying controversy, with Spanish team mate Fernando Alonso stripped of pole and demoted to sixth place on the grid for unnecessarily impeding the Briton. McLaren were also barred from scoring points. The weekend marked a watershed between Alonso and a team he accused of favouring Hamilton.

2006 - Jenson Button, Honda

Button's first Formula One victory. The Briton came through from 14th place in the rain. Alonso crashed while leading and Michael Schumacher retired three laps from the end.

2005 - Kimi Raikkonen, McLaren

Raikkonen revived his title hopes while Alonso, still 26 points clear, limped home 11th after being forced to pit following a brush with Ralf Schumacher at the first corner. Michael Schumacher started on pole position.

The notoriously tight and twisty Hungaroring is one of the slowest circuits in Formula One. In the past, qualifying has been crucial due to the difficulty of overtaking.

The circuit is some 25 km from Budapest.
