Jason Somerville - Head of Aerodynamics

_g7c1562_article

Jason Somerville graduated from Loughborough University of Technology with a degree in Automotive Engineering and Design and has had a strong background in aerodynamics ever since. In 1997, following a couple of years at TWR Racing where he developed the aerodynamic packages for the British Touring Car Championship Volvo 850 and S40 models, Jason joined Williams Motorsport Ltd as the aerodynamicist. He was responsible for the aerodynamic design and development of the 1998 Williams-BMW V12 sports prototype and its evolution into the 1999 Sebring 12hrs and Le Mans 24hrs winner.

He moved across to the Williams F1 team in 1999 and rose to the position of Joint-Head of the Aerodynamics Department, working on the first BMW-Williams, the FW22. He latterly worked on the race winning FW23, FW24 and FW25 chassis.

In 2003 Jason left Williams for Toyota where he progressed from Project Leader to Deputy Head of Aerodynamics in 2007, contributing to an increasingly competitive Formula One programme.

Following Toyota’s withdrawal from the sport at the end of 2009, Jason joined Lotus-Renault GP as Aerodynamics Project Leader and he played a significant role in last year’s innovative R31. In August 2011 Jason rejoined Williams F1 as Head of Aerodynamics.
