Rod Nelson joined Williams F1 at the end of the 2006 season, his appointment another key element in Williams' strategic winter programme of technical reinforcement joining other leading industry practitioners including John Russell, Jon Tomlinson, Amit Chakraborty and Ed Wood.

The 45 year old British engineer brings with him sixteen years of Formula One experience following the completion of his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 1990. After graduating, Rod started his motorsport career with Arrows as Research and Development Engineer before a three year spell at Simtek and then a return to Arrows as Race Engineer for the 1996 season.

In 1997, Rod headed to Renault F1 (then Benetton) where he race-engineered double World Champion, Fernando Alonso. During his tenure at Renault/Benetton, Rod also worked with Williams' race driver, Alex Wurz.

In an effort to augment the team's engineering department and release Sam Michael from some of his trackside duties to concentrate on development work, Rod was brought on board for the start of 2007 as Chief Operations Engineer, the team's senior track engineering position. As such, Rod now oversees, and is responsible for, all race-related operations from the pitwall at the season's 17 Grand Prix.
