Xevi Pujolar - Race Engineer, Maldonado
Growing up, Xevi Pujolar’s passion was motorbikes. His first race meeting was a MotoGP event at Paul Ricard in the mid-’80s and the bike meetings at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya became an annual pilgrimage thereafter.
In 1992 Xevi studied Mechanical Engineering for three years at Girona University, where he developed a two-stroke engine and worked for the Genikart team, for whom future world champion Fernando Alonso was a driver.
After graduating from Girona University, Xevi moved to Paris for a year to take a full-time job in karting. That led him to Formula Nissan in Spain and the RSM Marko Red Bull Junior team in Formula 3000. It was here that he met Niki Lauda who, at that time, was running Jaguar Racing in F1 and he got a job as Performance Engineer to Eddie Irvine in 2002.
Williams F1 were looking for a performance engineer on Juan Pablo Montoya’s car in 2003 and Xevi got the job. The Spaniard wanted to be a race engineer and in 2004 he worked at races and tests in order to learn as much as possible. Midway through that year he was promoted to Race Engineer.
He remained as a race engineer for William F1, until taking a year out
with Hispania F1, where he was Senior Race Engineer. He rejoined
Williams F1 in 2011 to be Race Engineer to Pastor Maldonado and the
partnership continues into 2012.
