A solid season for Williams. The team scores 12 more points than in2001 and it finishes second in the constructors’ championship as a consequence. Unfortunately, there’s little it can do about champions Ferrari, who are in a league of their own in 2002. The team finishes 1-2 in the Malaysian Grand Prix (its first 1-2 finish since 1996), but the result proves to be a false dawn because this is its only victory of the year. Juan Pablo Montoya is spectacular in qualifying, taking seven pole positions, but he’s unable to halt the juggernaut that is Michael Schuacher in the races. The German wins 11 of the 17 races and storms to his fifth world title.
