The team fields a one-car team during its first season of competition. Alan Jones immediately forms a close working relationship with Williams and Head, and the car is competitive. ‘AJ’ finishes fourth in only the team’s third race, in South Africa, and he bags a podium at the penultimate race of the year, the USA GP East. The team grows quickly during the year. Staff numbers swell from 17 to 50 and Frank buys an entry for a second car in 1979 from John Surtees, who’s team is closing down.
