Alain Prost joins the team after a sabbatical from racing and Damon Hill is promoted from test driver to race driver in January. Prost hits the ground running, winning the opening race of the season in South Africa, and Hill quickly gets up to speed in the second car. The Englishman wins three consecutive races (Hungary, Belgium and Italy), earning him a new contract for 1994. The FW15 is the dominant car on the grid, after the team successfully refines many of the electronics on the previous year’s FW14B. In the constructors’ championship Williams scores exactly double the number of world championship points of second placed McLaren. In September the team announces Ayrton Senna as its lead driver for 1994, in place of Prost. The Frenchman retires from the sport as statistically its most successful driver.
