In Photos: The best shots from 2023 so far

Williams Racing Photographer Richard Pardon talks us through his 10 favourite images from 2023 so far

It’s always exciting at the start of a new season. The opportunity to capture the all new challenger in the race bays back at the factory, just before it heads out around the world doing battle on 23 race tracks.
You only ever have one opportunity to capture a shot like this. Furthermore, you’ll only get three corners to capture it in. Sat in the boot of a chase vehicle, being followed by a Formula 1 car is an experience you’ll never forget.
Being able to shoot trackside this year is exciting. The run off between Turn 6 and 8 in Bahrain almost looks like an extension of the livery and makes this a clean, striking image.
Every time you watch a pit stop, you’ll see something new. It’s a choreographed dance that 19 mechanics take on in under 3 seconds. This shot aims to put you in the heart of it, a point of view from the front right mechanic as he guns off a wheel.
Pre-season testing is always busy. New car, new helmet, new overalls, new sponsors. You’re often given time slots with the drivers to capture new imagery and you try and make the best of your surroundings. I love the graphic leading lines in this image, not only from the red and white floor but the shadow cast from the nearby timing tower to frame Logan.
During a session the drivers often use dry-ice to keep themselves cool. Either that, or Logan wanted to be a magician. I love how the smoke frames Logan and makes this shot feel atmospheric.
Formula 1 is all about teamwork. It’s a privilege to watch how they operate, especially during a pit stop. I love this image as the team head out into sun-bathed pit lane, ready to receive one of the cars during the race. Almost as if they’re off to battle.
Sunset in Bahrain, and photographers start their annual pilgrimage to Turn 11, where the corner is backlit and cars are bathed in golden light.
Shooting trackside this year has given me a new appreciation for how quick these cars are, and how the drivers leave absolutely nothing on the table. Here’s Alex in Melbourne using every bit of the track. I like how the snaking tarmac in the background gives a sense of journey in this image.
I wish you could see how quick these cars passed me at Albert Park. Blink, and you’d definitely miss it. Fast shutter speed and a preset focus, Logan charges down the back straight leaving a trail of sparks, DRS wide open.
