Celebrating World Youth Skills Day at Williams

Looking to the future is an important aspect of how we operate at our Grove headquarters and this is one of the many reasons why World Youth Skills Day is so important to our team.

Working closely with our local partner schools is something we enjoy immensely. In recent months, we have provided children from a range of backgrounds with the chance to discover what goes into making a Formula One team tick.

We open their eyes to how departments across our team, such as technical, operations and business services, work together to achieve success on the track.

In addition, we also help these students understand the future path needed to take should they wish to reach our field of work, whether this is through an apprenticeship, industrial placement or a graduate route.

Similarly, we also run a specifically designed work experience week for our Williams Engineering Students, where just recently they had the opportunity to go to Silverstone and meet our drivers, plus talk to a Race Engineer.

They were also able to learn from George Britton, an alumni of the scheme who currently works for the team as a Performance Engineer.

Some of the programmes we run give us the chance to look at the wider picture when inspiring young talent into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), alongside the world of motorsport.

We go beyond theory and look at the application of subjects they learn at school, putting them into a real-world scenario.

There is also a focus on the soft skills they may not otherwise get a chance to practice, varying from mock interviews and CV help, to how to present themselves in a workplace.

- International Women in Engineering Day workshops with girls from local primary and secondary schools. (Mary Hare, Thameside Primary, Charlton Primary, St James’s, Millbrook Primary, Wantage Primary, St Nicholas’s Primary, King Alfreds, Fitzharrys)
