A new season, a clean slate and the first strategic puzzle of 2026 awaits in Melbourne.
The Formula 1 campaign begins once again at Albert Park, where the margins are tight and the opening round always brings unpredictability.
Unlike last year’s rain-affected curtain raiser, clear conditions are expected this time, meaning strategy may follow a more traditional path.
Carlos lines up P21, giving him plenty of strategic freedom, while Alex starts P15 with an eye on breaking into the midfield fight. With the first set of predictions of the season now locked in, our Grove guru – The Strategist – has made their calls for how the Australian GP might unfold on Pit Wall Predictions.
Don’t forget, with our new-for-2026 feature, you can now join or create a public or private group with friends to truly earn the bragging rights.

The Strategist’s picks – Australian GP
Q1: On which lap will Alex make his first stop?
Lap 11-20. Alex went long into the race last year, but with dry conditions expected, The Strategist predicts a more conventional early stop window.
Q2: On which lap will Carlos make his first stop?
Lap 21-30. Starting from the back row opens up strategy options, and a longer first stint could give Carlos opportunities as the race unfolds.
Q3: How many full Safety Car periods will there be?
One. Melbourne has a habit of producing interruptions, and even in calmer conditions The Strategist is banking on at least one deployment.
Q4: Which Williams driver will set our fastest lap of the race?
Carlos Sainz. If he runs longer early in the race, fresher tyres later on could put him in the best position to set the team’s quickest lap.

Q5: What will Alex’s longest stint on the same set of tyres be?
31+ laps. Everyone is still assessing degradation and compound behaviour, but a one-stop is likely around Albert Park, so The Strategist is saying Alex will stretch at least one stint deep into the race.
Q6: What will Carlos’ longest stint on the same set of tyres be?
31+ laps. Similar logic here – a long run could be the best way to climb forward from P21.
Q7: Which tyre will Alex end his race on?
Hard. The most durable compound to carry Alex to the flag.
Q8: Which tyre will Carlos end his race on?
Medium. If the drivers go down alternate routes like the rest of their picks suggest, The Strategist is going for Carlos to finish on the yellow-walled medium.
