With the second half of the 2026 season now underway, Atlassian Williams F1 Team has been making headlines both on and off the track, from James Vowles discussing the team's rebuild to Alex and Carlos explaining why they chose to stay. With the Madrid Fan Zone and Luke Browning’s next FP1 drive also making the news, here's what the media have been saying over the past week…
Vowles on Williams' rebuild
James Vowles sat down with WSJ Leadership Institute president Alan Murray to talk about what it takes to turn around a struggling F1 team. They discussed his work to transform Williams, the changes happening behind the scenes and why building for the long term is more important than looking for quick fixes.
In the conversation, James also explained why the work being done today can take around three years to show results. He spoke about how decisions around people, structure and processes can have a lasting impact, and why Williams needs to stay focused on its long-term goals rather than reacting to individual race weekends.
He also spoke openly about the importance of failure, describing his own setbacks as some of the most valuable experiences in his career and the lessons they have taught him. It’s a mindset that reflects his approach to Williams throughout the season: there are no shortcuts, and building a stronger team takes time.
Sainz and Albon explain why they stayed
ESPN takes a closer look at why both drivers decided to commit their futures to Williams despite a difficult first half of the season.
Carlos Sainz, who joined Williams from Ferrari after being convinced by James Vowles' vision for the team, says the challenging start hasn't changed his belief in the project. He acknowledged that his two podiums in 2025 may have raised expectations, but ultimately said he chose to re-sign because he believes in what Williams is building.
For Alex Albon, the decision was slightly different. Having been with Williams since 2022, Alex has already become one of the team's most experienced drivers, passing Nigel Mansell for the most F1 starts in Williams colours and reaching his 100th race with the team at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Alex explained that he wants to see the team respond strongly and bounce back before considering a longer deal.
Fan Zone heads to Madrid for the first time
TheRace.com has covered the news that we’ll be taking our Fan Zone experience to Madrid for the first time. The Fan Zone will run from 7–13 September at Plaza del Callao, with free entry for fans throughout race week.
Carlos Sainz will headline appearances alongside James Vowles and Reserve Driver Luke Browning, with more details on timings to follow.
Fans can get up close to a full-scale FW48 show car, explore exclusive Madrid merchandise, try out a simulator featuring the new Madrid circuit and pick up a special-edition Williams x Marvel comic created for the event. There will also be activities from partners including Kraken, Komatsu, BW Scores and Estrella.
The Fan Zone will also celebrate Williams' history in Spain, with helmets from Carlos Sainz and Marc Gené on display alongside trophies from the team's Spanish victories with Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell and Jacques Villeneuve. Now in its fifth season, the Williams Fan Zone has welcomed almost half a million fans worldwide.
Browning confirmed for Monza FP1
Formula1.com has covered the news that Luke Browning will take over Alex Albon’s car for FP1 at Monza, marking his second FP1 appearance of the 2026 season as part of Williams’ rookie running.
Luke was originally due to drive in FP1 at both Barcelona and Austria, but an electrical issue prevented him from taking part in Spain. He eventually made his 2026 FP1 debut in Austria, finishing P18 and ending the session just three-tenths off Alex’s pace.
Heading to Monza, Luke sees the session as another chance to build his experience in the FW48 and complete more laps in the car, while helping the team prepare for the Italian Grand Prix. Alongside his Williams simulator work, Luke continues to compete in Super Formula in Japan.
Luke will take to the track when FP1 gets underway at 12:30 local time on 4 September.
